Metallic and Tweed

I love mixing prints and colours, especially those that clash and wouldn't normally go together.  I really don't know how I would describe my style because I have a mixture of classic city chic with girly grunge.  Sometimes I dress quite loud and eccentric and other times I'm more muted with neutral colours.  Sometimes I want to look put together and other times I just want casual comfort.

Last Friday I went to Roof East in London which is such a cool venue.  It's on the 8th floor of a multi storey carpark in Stratford and every few months they change the theme.  Until the end of February it's ski lodges and igloos.  They also have slider games and live music.  Oh and some great cocktails and food!  



I had a Pretty in Pink cocktail which was prosecco, vodka and berry juice and my boyfriend had a Zombie which was 3 types of rum mixed with lemonade!  We then got chips and pizza from the Greedy Pig stall who kindly made mine vegan for me :)

As I was going straight from the office I needed something that was work appropriate (I'm a trainee lawyer) but still with a bit of edge to show my own style so I wore this tweed skirt from Warehouse with a black Primark roll neck jumper and my favourite metallic flatforms from ASOS.

A Weekend in Manchester

I went to Manchester for New Year.  My boyfriend has friends there so we thought it would be nice to all get together and do something.  The problem was everyone (especially boys!) was quite unorganised and so nothing really got planned and we ended up staying in.. and playing video games?!  Was more like a boys night in than a celebration but seeing as the girls were outnumbered (2 v 4) we had little choice.



I didn't get to see a whole lot of Manchester because we were only there for one night and spent most of it with friends but what I did see I liked and definitely want to go back.  It's a really chilled out City with a quirky vibe.  It's not what I was expecting.  I thought it might be a bit run down with loud obnoxious people but I was so wrong!

I can see why it attracts young people and there's so much going on and things to do.  For a vegan there were a lot of vegan restaurants that I saw on my Happy Cow app although we stuck with what we know and had Zizzi for dinner and Subway for lunch!  




The train from London only took 2 hours so not bad at all.  I would like to explore more if I went back.  I hear the night life is quite good and they have lots of cool bars and club with live music.  They also have warehouse raves which are kinda my guilty pleasure ;)

Can Lifting Weights Make Me Bulky?

This is something I've always wondered.  I'm naturally slim so I don't workout to lose weight but to tone up and feel good.  So there isn't a strict yes or no answer for this one.  Yes they can make you bulky but only if you're lifting super heavy weights several times per week.

The top half of my body is smaller than the bottom.  Therefore, my legs are stronger than my arms so because I do a lot of squats and lunges as I find them easier it builds muscle in my legs.  With my arms I only lift 1-2kgs and only once a week so they remain toned without being too muscley.  I also started running every other day and found that this made my legs slightly bigger but toned my stomach a lot.  You just can't win!



Anyway, I did a lot research and found that exercises that use heavy weights, squats, lunges, crossfit etc are the ones that are going to really bulk you.  Exercises such as spinning, running and HIIT should be done 1-2 times per week and the best exercises to stop bulkiness being pilates, walking and boxing.  So this is the weekly workout routine I put together:

Monday - HIIT class
Tuesday - dance class
Wednesday - 3k walk/jog
Thursday - kettlebells and HIIT class
Friday - pilates
Saturday - 5k run
Sunday - pilates



I'm going to give this a go for the next 12 weeks and see what the results are like, hopefully I can get my body more in proportion!

The Only Skincare Products You Need This Winter

My skin is generally normal to dry so during winter it gets super dry and I have to swap up the skincare products I use.  I also suffer with eczema on my face so have to use over the counter products as they're the only things that help.

I have a 6 step nightly routine so here is everything I use in the order I use them:

First Cleanse

I like to double skin, the first one is to remove my makeup.  For this I like the brightening hot cloth cleanser from Superdrug's Naturally Radiant range.  It's really soft, removes makeup and makes me skin smooth.

Second Cleanse

Then to really wash my face I use the cleanser called Purity by Philosophy.  This is one of my holy grail products and has been in my routine for over a year now.  You only need the tinest amount and it goes a long way.  It's super gentle on the eye area so can use it to remove mascara.

Toner

This is another holy grail product I've been using for a while and also quite a cult product I believe.  It's the Glow Tonic by Pixi.  I like it because unlike other toners it's not drying.  It gets rid of any last makeup or dirt on my face and gives a nice glow to the skin.

Hydrocortisone from Derma Care by Boots

This is the over the counter product I use on my eyelids and lips as I suffer with extreme dryness and flaky skin.  A little goes a long way and it's the only thing that gets rid of my eczema.

Serum

Then I use the Dragon's blood serum by Nip & Fab.  This is really hydrating and I like to put it on after the toner everywhere except my eyes as I like to use the eye cream there.

Facial Oil

Lastly I use a facial oil.  I've been a fan of these for a long time now as they're so good for dry skin.  This one is the Vitamin E one by Superdrug and again a little goes a long way.  I use it everywere and even rub over my hands after.

My Birthday at Vanilla Black Vegan Michelin Star Restaurant

Last week I turned 31 (how did that happen?!) and my boyfriend surprised me with a very fancy meal at Vanilla Black in London which was not only vegetarian and vegan but a michelin star.  I didn't even know they existed?  Anyway, the food was sooo nice and the staff were brilliant.  I didn't want too much of a fuss so I didn't mention my birthday but I did see some others celebrating different occasions.

They have a set 5 course meal but I went for 2 courses as I just can't eat that much.  For main I went for the mushroom and cous cous as mushrooms are my all time favourite thing to eat.  Then for dessert I had a deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake which has got to be the best vegan dessert I've ever tried.
